It didn’t take long after meeting my partner for her to ask me — or should I reframe that — require me to take the Enneagram personality test. It was Spring 2020 the world was mid stream down a global pandemic and I had no idea what an Enneagram even was. Though if push came to shove, I’d probably settle on it being some non invasive medical procedure.
Somewhat reluctantly I followed the link she’d sent and I proceeded to take the online questionnaire and not long after the results were in—I was a seven!
But what was a seven? I had no idea if that was either a good or a bad thing. Upon disclosing the findings I learned this rather smart, beautiful and funny woman I was just begining to fall in love with was a type seven as well.
I suppose I was relieved, it meant my flaws were her flaws, we shared the same strengths and weaknesses and delving a little deeper into the Enneagram landscape I learned there are certain personalities types which are more preferable than others!
In the last year or two I have come to better understand the value of this popular personality test. Simply put it breaks down everyone into nine groups. Each one has their virtues and vices and it’s not only fiancés-to-be who use the test, it’s become widely practiced by psychologists and councillors the world over.
At the heart of the Enneagram is the increased ability to understand yourself, gaining insights into what subconsciously drives our particular personality structure. On top of this, it teaches to better approach and appreciate what drives others around us.
Over Christmas my partner brought me and the rest of the family these Enneagram cards below. They’ve been surprisingly informative and I look forward to using them throughout the year.
A few people have seen the cards and asked her for the link to them. So with that in mind, I put this list of useful Enneagram literature together to assist those looking to learn the basics and for those seeking to go deeper into there understanding of this area of learning.
